Outdoor Kitchen Cabinets / Cabinetry Buying Guide
Imagine how incomplete and inconvenient your indoor kitchen would be without cabinets. The same holds true for outdoor kitchens. Choosing cabinets for your outdoor kitchen is no different from your normal kitchen cabinets. What you need to consider is the choice of materials and the shape of the cabinets.
Choice of Materials
Traditionally the most popular choices for outdoor cabinets were masonry or wood.
Masonry cabinets made from concrete or stucco are weather resistant and hardy. However they have a few disadvantages associated with them. They often give an unfinished look and if not maintained over a period of time, develop unhygienic interiors by attracting dirt, mold & mildew. They are also subject to cracking and settlement issues over time.
Wood cabinets are easy to install and are easily customizable. They are however not weather resistant and will rot, warp, crack, swell, discolor and deteriorate without maintenance especially in coastal areas.
Stainless steel cabinets are weather resistant and give a classy look. They can easily be washed and are hygienic. They do cost more upfront but have a longer lifespan.
A popular choice nowadays is marine grade polymer cabinets. They are waterproof ,stain resistant and aesthetically good looking .They come in a variety of light colors such as dolphin grey , glacier grey , polar white , sea foam and Sand shade. They are easily washable.
Shape of Cabinets
The shape of your cabinets depends on your requirements and how you would be using your outdoor kitchen. Consider mixing single drawer, 2 and 4 drawer cabinets along with single full height drawers to make your storage robust. Sink cabinets with double doors and customized cabinets which go under your grill would give your kitchen a finishing look. Cabinets can also be accessorized with pull-out tank or trash drawers. For elaborate outdoor kitchens, wall cabinets are a good idea. Just make sure they are placed away from grill smoke.
