A grill kept outside for long periods of time is susceptible to corrosion and wear and tear from weather elements. Most of the covers are made from waterproof two ply fabric or marine grade vinyl. While any material may be good as long it is weather resistant, avoid felt lined grill covers. Though they might be cheap they often are destroyed by mice, squirrels, or other unknown critters.
The price range of a barbecue grill cover varies. Low end covers costing around $30 would last you around a year. On the other hand heavy duty covers cost upwards of $50 will last you around two years if maintained properly. Many times the price you pay for a cover also depends on brand of the company. For example Weber grill covers are much higher priced than its counterparts.

To buy a grill cover just make sure the size is adequate for your grill. Not too small, not too big.
