What are fill in works?

While dealing with contractors you would often come across a term ‘fill in works’. This is a jargon which is used in the construction industry.

Fill in works are projects which contractors can do when circumstances prohibit them from doing regularly scheduled work. For example if a contractor has a project to install flooring , he may be unable to do so because of heavy rains , extreme cold  or because stamped concrete tiles of a particular color are unavailable at the local store. Many times materials are not delivered on time due to various vagaries. The contractor thus may lose money if he sits idle. If he during that time can install flooring on another project or perhaps install indoor cabinets, he may be able to utilize his time.

All contractors are on lookout for fill in jobs. Since fill-in jobs are valuable to contractors you can often negotiate for a lower price if you are willing to allow your work to be a fill-in project.

Before you decide whether to make your project a fill in project, note that all jobs are not suitable for it. They work best when the project completion does not have a direct impact on you. Therefore flooring the backyard can be a good fill in project but kitchen remodeling may become bothersome as you would need the kitchen as soon as possible.  It can prove irksome to regularly contact a contractor and ask him on when he may complete the project.
