Find DIY outdoor kitchen ideas can be a little hard if you don’t know where to start. You know you want to build one, but you have no idea what you want. That’s not a problem at all. I’m sure you already have a rough idea of what you would like your design to be, but there’s still plenty of room for inspiration. I’ll show you where to look for more ideas. And if you have no idea at all, I’ll also show you how to get some ideas and go from there.
Where to Look for Ideas
Fortunately for us, finding ideas for a design and finding visuals for inspiration is easy to find these days. There are many ways to see some ideas, but these are an excellent place to start.
Finding Pictures for Inspiration on The Internet
The internet makes it super easy to find inspiration and get some design ideas for your backyard kitchen. It’s rich with pictures, actual design plans, and videos.
Start with looking for pictures on Google’s image search. Never used it before? Just go to Google, type in outdoor kitchen ideas. Then click on the”Images” link right underneath the search bar. You’ll be presented with thousands of pictures. Look at the ones that stand out for you and draw some inspiration from those.
Another great place to find pictures of ideas is Pinterest. Just to Pinterest’s website and search for an outdoor kitchen. You’ll find tons of images and ideas.
Are pictures not enough? How about videos showing people’s design? Maybe even videos showing how people went about building their designs? Maybe years ago this would’ve been hard to find, but thanks to Youtube, it’s easy. Just search YouTube, and you’ll see plenty of videos posted by others who have built their outdoor kitchen.
Look at Magazines
Magazines are another great place to find inspiration. Sometimes, you’ll even find some useful information and tips that can be helpful when you build your kitchen.
If you’ve been looking at magazines about outdoor kitchens for a while now, you might already have some ideas about which magazines are good. If you don’t know of any publications, you can always search for them on Google. Otherwise, give Better Homes & Gardens, as well as Sunset magazine a try.
The beautiful thing about buying a book about building your outdoor kitchen is it provides more than just pictures for ideas. It covers a lot of information and answers a lot of questions that you might have about building your own kitchen in your backyard.
For the price most DIY books are asking for, it’s a worthwhile buy. It really covers almost everything you need to know about building your own. You can even choose to get a couple of books or more just to get different ideas and tips from various authors. If you’re going to be spending thousands of dollars on you’re projecting, spending a little on some books will probably help you save more money overall.
Contractors and other Businesses That Build Outdoor Kitchens
Look for contractors and other businesses that are in the business of building outdoor kitchens, or selling accessories and products for outdoor kitchens. Most of them will have a website full of info and images. Take a look at pictures of their previous works to find some ideas.
There are a bunch of manufacturers who make products and accessories for outside kitchens. Others also make prefabricated (ready-made kits) outdoor kitchens. Look at their products for ideas. If you like the way they’ve done something, you can always just choose to buy what they offer. Or you can build something that comes close to it.
Write Down What You Like
While you’re looking for ideas, jot down items and accessories that really got your attention. If you really liked something, write it down. Make a list of things you like. This makes it easier to finalize a list of items you want to have in your backyard kitchen.
Also be sure to save images of design that you like. If you found it on the internet, you can always bookmark the address to the picture you want to keep. Otherwise, just keep it to a folder on your computer.
Some items you might want to jot down might include:
- Pizza Ovens
- Gas cooktops
Take a Good Look at Your Backyard
Once you have an idea of what you want for your outside kitchen, it’s time to take a good look at your backyard. You might already know where you might like to build the kitchen, but if it’s still worth another look. By now, you’ll already have a general idea of how you would like your kitchen to look like (as well as the general size).
Do you have the right amount of space for the kitchen you want? Is there a particular spot in the yard that might fit the kitchen better? Where in the yard do you want it? How much space do you have to work with? These are some questions you need to answer before you can continue. You can build something that you don’t have room for, so make sure your yard will have space for what you’re planning.
Another thing to take into consideration when choosing where you’ll build the kitchen includes plumbing, electrical wiring, and maybe even a gas line. Will your kitchen need any of these items? Will you need to hire a contractor to put them in place? The farther away your kitchen is, the harder (or more expensive) it will be to install plumbing the likes.
Ideas for Small Spaces or a More Simple Backyard Kitchen
What if you don’t have ample space to build your kitchen, or you just want a more simple backyard kitchen? That’s not going to be a problem. Just cut back on some items. Keep your list of things small.
Maybe you just need a grill and a small island. That’s about as basic as it gets, but it could be all you need. Sure, it would be nice to have a bunch of other fancy accessories like cooktops and even a fridge. But if you have to build your kitchen way in the back of your backyard, running power and gas all the way down there might not be very practical. For that, you can just opt for pure charcoal or propane powered grill. If you really must have a cooktop, you can always look at propane cooktops.
Also, keep in mind that you don’t have to be short on space to keep the outside kitchen simple. Maybe you just want a simple design with just the basics. There’s nothing wrong with that. Plus it saves a lot of money and is an excellent option if budget than space more limits you.
